What are the different types of licenses?

Updated on

Standalone Licenses

A Standalone license is a license that may only be activated on a single computer at a time. Standalone licenses for all editions of Harmony and Storyboard Pro can be purchased directly from the Toon Boom Store.

The available types of Standalone licenses include:

Free Trial

  • A 21-day free trial available for Harmony and Storyboard Pro.
  • When downloading a trial from the Toon Boom website, a trial license is automatically linked to your account.
  • Like full licenses, a trial must be activated before use.
  • Trial licenses provide full access to all features, but only for a limited time.
  • Once the trial for a specific version expires, it cannot be renewed or reactivated for the same version on the same device.
  • See How do I get a free software trial? for more information.

Subscription

  • This license type requires a monthly or annual subscription fee.
  • As long as your subscription is active, you receive access to the latest product versions at no extra cost.

Perpetual License

  • This license is a one-time purchase.
  • It is only valid for the specific version of the software that you purchased.
  • An upgrade code must be purchased to use newer software versions, or a higher tier edition.

Multi-Seat License

  • Similar to a single-user license, but allows for activation on multiple machines using the same product code.
  • This option may be convenient for small studios, where using a dedicated license server may not be practical.

Network/Floating Licenses

Tailored Network/Floating licenses for studio environments can be purchased for Harmony, Storyboard Pro and Producer by contacting the Toon Boom Sales Team.

The following applies when using license on a Network/Server:

  • Licenses are sold with a fixed number of seats.
  • Licenses must be installed on a dedicated license server.
  • Client machines on the same network connect to this server to borrow a seat when launching the product on their machine.
  • The seat is returned automatically when the product is closed.
NOTE: Network/Floating licenses are sometimes also referred to as ‘Server’ licenses.

Network/Floating Licenses can be configured to be borrowed through the local network:

  • Seats can be manually borrowed from the dedicated license server machine by client machines.
  • When borrowed, the license is stored locally on the client machine and is valid for a specific number of days.
  • During this borrowing period, the client does not need to stay connected to the license server.

See How do I borrow a license from a License Server? and How do I return a borrowed license to a License Server? for more information.

WARNING: A Network/Floating License may not be returned from the dedicated license server machine to be used on another server.
