When using a license server, usually an active connection to the server is required to continue using the Toon Boom software. However, depending on your license model, it is possible to borrow a license from a license server for a defined period of time. This removes the need for an active connection to the license server during the borrowing period. The steps below will show you how to borrow a license from a license server.
Step 1: Open the Toon Boom Activation Wizard
- Open your Toon Boom software, or do one of the following:
- In Windows: On your desktop, use the Windows key and search for “License Wizard”. Click on the result to open the Toon Boom Activation Wizard.
- In macOS: Open the Spotlight search by pressing ⌘ + Space. Search for “License Wizard”. Click on the result to open the Toon Boom Activation Wizard.
- The Toon Boom Activation Wizard will appear:
| NOTE: By default, the Window’s version of the wizard is light grey/silver, but the steps are exactly the same as those shown above. |
Step 2: Connect to the License Server and borrow the license
- Click on Activate License.
- The Activation Options window opens.
- Click on Use License Server.
- The Server Activation window opens.
- Click on Borrow from Server.
- The Server Activation - Borrowed License window opens.
- Do the following to borrow the license:
- License Server Address field: Enter the license server’s hostname or its IP Address.
- Port field: If there is a port specified for your license’s activation, enter it here. If there is no port specified, the default ANY option can be left in the field.
- Product Code field: Enter the product code corresponding to the license that you want to borrow. This product code should match the product code of the license that is activated on the server.
- Duration field: Enter the amount of days that the borrow period should last. After this period ends, the license seat will be returned to the server.
- Click on Borrow License and wait for the license server to validate your request.
- The Activation Successful screen appears. It confirms the product you activated and the date at which the borrowed license will expire. Once the expiration date is reached, the license will be returned to the server.
- Click Finish to close License Wizard.
NOTE: While the IP Address of the license server is good enough for borrowing or activating the license, we recommend using the server hostname. If you don’t have this information, contact your System Administrator. If you are not sure about the port that should be used, contact your System Administrator. |
| TIP: You can also borrow a license in a terminal. This can be useful if you want to script the borrowing procedure to automate the configuration of clients. |
Q&A
Question:
Why do I get an error message after entering the hostname and clicking Borrow License?
Answer:
There are different reasons why an error message would be observed at that point. Either the license server’s hostname is not recognized by the computer, or the license server’s firewall is enabled and blocking the connection.
If the hostname is not recognized by the computer, the hosts file located in the computer’s system folder should be modified.
If the firewall is enabled on the server and blocking the connection, please see Adding Firewall Exceptions for the License Server on how to configure firewall exceptions in the license server.
