FAQ: Licenses

Updated on

What products can I purchase licenses for?

You can purchase licenses for any edition of Harmony and Storyboard Pro directly from the Toon Boom Store.

What’s the difference between a standalone license and a network/floating license?

Standalone licenses are intended for individual users or small teams and are activated directly on each computer. Network/floating licenses, on the other hand, require a license server and are designed for larger teams that need to share a pool of licenses over a network. See What are the different types of licenses? for more information.

How long is the free trial period?

The free trial period lasts for 21 days.

Can I use the trial more than once on the same machine?

No. Once the trial for a specific product version has expired on a machine, it cannot be reactivated for that version on the same machine.

Do I need to activate a trial license?

Yes, a trial license must be activated before you can use the software. See How do I activate my Trial License?

What’s included with a desktop subscription license?

A desktop subscription includes access to the latest versions of the software, as long as your monthly or yearly subscription remains active.

Does a perpetual license include future software updates?

No, a perpetual license is valid only for the specific version you purchased. To use a newer version, you must buy an upgrade code. See How do I upgrade my license?.

Can I upgrade from a lower edition to a higher edition of the same product?

Yes, you can purchase an edition upgrade code to move from a lower-tier to a higher-tier edition. See How do I upgrade my license?.

What is a multiple-seat license?

It’s a license that allows activation on multiple machines using the same product code. It’s ideal for small teams that don’t want to set up a license server.

What is a network/floating license?

A network/floating license is a license installed on a dedicated license server. This license is distributed to users - also commonly referred to as clients - through the networks. Client machines borrow a seat when launching the software and return it when the software is closed.

Can a network/floating license be manually returned from the license server or transferred to another dedicated server machine?

No, once activated on the license server, network/floating licenses cannot be returned manually. If a floating license is returned manually, contact licensor@toonboom.com with an explanation of your circumstances, and please provide the product code of the network/floating license that was returned.

What is a borrowable network/floating license?

Some network/floating licenses have an option to allow client machines to manually borrow a license from the license server for a set period of time. The license is stored locally on the client machine and remains valid for a limited number of days, even without a connection to the server. See How do I borrow a license from a License Server?.

Can I use the software offline with a network/floating license?

Yes, but only with a borrowable network/floating license, which must be borrowed while connected to the license server. See How do I borrow a license from a License Server?.
