Phase 1: Licenses and IT Deployment

The first step is getting Toon Boom software installed and running across your school's devices. Your CSM will reach out to your IT contact shortly after your purchase to make this as straightforward as possible.

What to expect

Your IT department will receive the license keys and installer files from the Toon Boom Licensing team. These are needed to deploy Harmony or Storyboard Pro across your lab and any shared devices. Toon Boom licenses are activated per machine or via a dedicated, on-site license server. Our team is available to assist with any technical questions during setup.

Typical deployment takes one to three days depending on your school's infrastructure, hardware configuration, and IT team availability. Schools using district-managed imaging or a license server may require a slightly longer setup window. Your CSM can connect your IT team with our Technical Support specialists on request.

You will find activation and installation instructions in our Help Centre:

Temporary Licenses

While the payment is processed by the school administration, Toon Boom issues temporary licenses that generally expire within a few weeks. Once the payment is processed, Toon Boom issues the full term licenses.

For more information, see About Temporary Licenses.

School: Home Use Licenses

When you purchase academic lab licenses, your school might be eligible for complimentary home use student licenses (conditions apply). This means students can continue working on their projects from home, an important advantage for hands-on learning and portfolio development.

If your purchase includes Home-Use licenses, your IT department will receive instructions for distributing home use licenses to students. They will be sent in a separate document along with the full-term institution licenses once the payment is fully processed.

For more information, see About the Student Home-Use License Offer.

Deployment scenarios

Scenario Technical Implications What to expect
Lab deployment (standalone) A dedicated classroom with a set amount of workstations. Straightforward installation. Standard setup time is 1 to 3 days.
District-wide or multi-site A district-wide network infrastructure with computers connecting to the district's server for license validation May require coordination with the district IT. Your CSM will facilitate.
License server (on-site) A school-wide network with computers pulling a license from a local server. Additional setup is required. Toon Boom Technical Support is available to assist.
Home use distribution Home use student licenses that are individually distributed (i.e not associated with student accounts). Instructions to be provided with license delivery.

Phase 2: Teacher Training and Preparation

Once your software is installed, the focus shifts to your teachers. A confident teacher is the most important factor in student success, and Toon Boom has designed a range of resources to get instructors up and running quickly, regardless of their experience level.

Your CSM will reach out directly to your teaching staff to introduce themselves, share relevant resources, and answer any early questions. They will share a 30/60/90 day plan tailored to your goals.

Teachers can find a lot of ready to use resources in our Help Centre Education & Training section and on our Learn Portal.

If your school purchased instructor-led classes, our Professional Services team will reach out to you to schedule the sessions. For group online classes, registered instructors will receive the calendar invitations, outline, schedule, and assets a few weeks before the class starts.

Phase 3: Animation StartingPoint Courseware (if applicable)

Animation StartingPoint is Toon Boom's online courseware platform, designed to make it easy for any teacher, regardless of their animation background, to deliver structured, engaging lessons.

The courseware includes:

  • Full curriculum for Intro to Animation with Harmony or Intro to Storyboarding with Storyboard Pro that is aligned with certification learning objectives
  • Student assignments and grading rubrics
  • Quizzes, videos, handouts, and interactive learning content
  • Educator support and resources in the form of teacher materials

Getting set up

The Toon Boom team will reach out shortly after purchase to set up your virtual classroom in the courseware platform (Tovuti). Once your classroom is ready, you will be able to add and manage students and start teaching your class.

For more information, see our Help Centre’s Courseware section.

Phase 4: Associate Certification (if applicable)

The Toon Boom Associate Certification is an optional, industry-recognised credential that validates a student's knowledge of Harmony or Storyboard Pro at a foundational level. Certification is delivered through NOCTI, a leading provider of technical and career education assessments.

For more about Associate certification, see FAQ: Toon Boom Associate Certification Exams.

What to Expect

Schools purchase exam credits directly through NOCTI's Client Services Center. Each credit allows a student up to three attempts. Exams are delivered online and can be scheduled throughout the academic year.

Passing students automatically receive a digital badge and certificate, valid for three years. Toon Boom provides preparation resources including study guides, practice tests, and dedicated preparation journeys through the Learn Portal or the Animation StartingPoint courseware.

Your CSM will share with your teachers additional certification preparation resources.
