Getting Started with the Toon Boom Associate Certification (TCA)

Updated on

This article details processes about how to get started with the Toon Boom Associate Certification via our partner, NOCTI. Here you will learn who manages the program, how ordering works at a high level, and where to go for help.

NOTE: If you’d like more information on whether the Associate Exams are right for you and your students, please see our FAQ before continuing.

About the Site Coordinator role

Before starting the process, a Site Coordinator must be assigned by your school. The Site Coordinator is a designated person in your school who sets up and runs the testing program. This must be someone in an administrative, decision-making role, such as a principal, CTE coordinator, counsellor, dean, director, or testing coordinator.

Teachers cannot serve as the Site Coordinator.

At a high level, the Site Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Creating the NOCTI account and completing any required paperwork.
  • Ordering exam credits through NOCTI.
  • Selecting and approving proctors for exams.
  • Providing teachers and students with access, resources, and results.

How do we get set up with NOCTI?

Once you have designated a Site Coordinator, the following must be completed:

  1. Your Site Coordinator starts by completing a Testing Agreement on NOCTI's site.
  2. NOCTI creates the account and sends login access, usually within two business days.
  3. After that, everything is managed through NOCTI's Client Services Center.
  4. For the full account setup, ordering, and paperwork steps, NOCTI logins and account setup.
NOTE: Once the account is created, NOCTI sends a Welcome email and an Account Authentication email directly to your Site Coordinator. Keep an eye out for messages from @nocti.org, and ask your IT team to whitelist that domain if needed.

How does ordering work?

Exam credits are ordered by the Site Coordinator through NOCTI's Client Services Center. Each Toon Boom exam is listed individually, with English and Spanish versions available as separate products. Payment can be made by credit card or purchase order, and promo codes are entered at checkout when applicable. Student test codes are typically sent within two business days of ordering.

About the Proctor role

Schools manage proctoring according to their district's rules. To protect the integrity of the exam, a proctor may not be a teacher who is actively directing a student in preparing for the exam. If needed, remote proctoring can be purchased through NOCTI as an add-on, where a vetted third-party service verifies the candidate's identity and supervises the exam.

What is the certification process?

After setting up the NOCTI account and ordering the exam credits, the overall process is the same for every school:

  1. Students prepare for their exam using Toon Boom study resources.
  2. Students take the exam online while supervised by an approved proctor. Results are scored automatically.
  3. Passing students receive their certificate and unsuccessful students prepare for their next attempt.

Important Exam Policies

Take note that the following policies apply to every school's testing program:

  • Exam codes expire on June 30 each year and do not carry over to the next school year.
  • Each exam credit allows up to three attempts, with a 21-day wait between attempts.
  • Online exams and remote proctoring services cannot be returned for credit.

How can I prepare my students for the exam?

As a teacher, you need to know what to expect on exam day and help your students prepare. You do not need to manage the NOCTI account or ordering, as that is handled by your school's Site Coordinator.

Study Resources

If your school has purchased the StartingPoint courseware, you have access to a complete teaching package, knowledge checks, and practice quizzes.

The Learn Portal also offers free resources, assets and quizzes.

Teachers can be given access to score reports and certificates through NOCTI's Teacher Resource Center. For help retrieving or printing results, see NOCTI's resources or contact them directly.
