How Does Toon Boom Handle Student Data?
Toon Boom takes student privacy seriously. We have designed the StartingPoint Courseware onboarding process so that you, the teacher, are in full control of your students' information. Toon Boom does not request or collect student personal data. You enter and manage all student information directly on the platform.
What Information is Needed to Create a Student Account?
A student account requires only three fields:
- First name
- Last name
- Email address
However, you decide what to enter in these fields. You do not need to use real student names or personal email addresses.
Options for Protecting Student Information
You can use any of the following approaches when adding students to the platform:
- Real names and school emails: If your school's privacy policy allows it.
- Student IDs: Use the student's school-issued ID number as their name (e.g., first name: "STU", last name: "40291").
- Anonymous identifiers: Use any naming convention that makes sense for your class (e.g., first name: "Student", last name: "01").
- Generic or placeholder emails: If students do not have individual email addresses, you can use a generic format (e.g. student01@yourschool.com). The email field is used as the username for login, but the platform does not verify or send required emails to it.
The student only needs a username (their email) and a password to access the courseware.
Password Distribution
We recommend that you create passwords for your students and distribute them directly (on paper, through your school's messaging system, etc.) rather than relying on the platform's email-based password reset. This avoids potential issues with school email servers blocking external emails.
See How do I reset student passwords? for instructions on setting passwords.
Important Reminders
- Do not email student personal information to Toon Boom. You manage all student data directly on the platform.
- Toon Boom holds administrative access to the courseware platform for the purpose of setting up schools and providing technical support. We recommend using anonymous identifiers or student IDs to minimize the amount of personal information stored on the platform.
- If you need to change a student's information after adding them, you can do so from your Team dashboard.
