Why does my software take a long time to start up?

Updated on

If you find that your software is taking an abnormally long time to load the Welcome Screen, it’s likely an issue caused by using different license types.

Specifically, this can happen when using the software with a Floating/Network license, and then using it with a Standalone license at a later date. This will result in the software first searching for the Floating license before timing out and defaulting to the Standalone one, which results in a longer launch time.

The steps provided below will help you remove the configuration of the Floating/Network license to enable faster launch times when using a Standalone license.

For more information on license types, see What are the different types of licenses?.

Step 1: Find and delete the Toon Boom license file

The Toon Boom License file is the file that tells a workstation where to request the Floating/Network license in your local network. This needs to be deleted.

  1. Close the software.
  2. Open your operating system’s browser or finder and insert one of the following default addresses into the address bar, or the Finder’s Go to Folder… feature:
    • Windows: C:\flexlm\
    • macOS: /usr/local/flexlm/licenses
    • Linux: /usr/local/flexlm/licenses
  3. If the license file is not located in the default folder, use your OS’s search feature to search for ‘license.dat.’
  4. Once located, delete the license.dat file from the folder.
  5. Reopen the software.
NOTE: If you’re still encountering a slow start-up of the software after clearing the license file, please contact us. For more information, see How do I contact Toon Boom Support?.
