Why am I having display issues with the software in Windows? (NVIDIA graphics)

Updated on

To ensure optimal performance and stability while using Toon Boom software, it is essential that your system utilizes the correct graphics hardware. By default, Windows may sometimes prioritize power saving over performance, assigning the software to an integrated graphics chip rather than your dedicated high-performance GPU. This can lead to display issues, lag, or rendering errors.

This article guides you through forcing your computer to prioritize your dedicated NVIDIA graphics card for Toon Boom products. Before changing any settings, ensure you are using the latest drivers for your specific card. You can update your GPU drivers by consulting the hardware manufacturer’s website directly.

Step 1: Open the NVIDIA Control Panel

  1. Open Windows Search by clicking the search icon or search box on the taskbar.
  2. Enter “NVIDIA Control Panel” and select the result.
  3. The NVIDIA control panel opens up.

Step 2: Select the software

  1. In the NVIDIA Control Panel navigation pane on the left, select 3D Settings > Manage 3D settings.

  1. In the Manage 3D Settings page on the right, click on the Program Settings tab.
The Program Settings tab allows you to assign unique 3D settings to a software; the software will then automatically use this setting whenever it is launched.

  1. Under Select a Program to Customize, use the dropdown menu to select the Toon Boom product for which you want to customize the preset 3D settings.
  2. If the Toon Boom Product does not appear in the dropdown menu, use the Add button to add it to the list by locating the software EXE file.

NOTE: By default, the software is installed under C:\\Program Files (x86)\Toon Boom Animation inside a folder that has the same name as the software. You can find the EXE file by going to win64 folder > bin folder.

Step 3: Set the preferences in the Program Settings tab

  1. Once the software is selected, set the following parameters:
    • OpenGL rendering GPU to your High-Performance GPU (e.g. NVIDIA GeForce card)
    • Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance.

  1. Press Apply to save and exit the configuration.

NOTE: If you still have issues with the software after changing these settings, please see How do I contact Toon Boom support?
