An Auto-Patch node can be used in multiple ways in Harmony Premium. It is most known for its ability to create a quick, simple patch effect. This is especially useful for rigs made with pencil lines as it prevents colour fills from overlapping line art.
What is an Auto-Patch node?
The Auto-Patch node is a single node that performs the function of the following node system:
- A Cutter node
- A Colour-Art node (gets cut by the line)
- A Line-Art node (cuts the colour)
The Auto-Patch node simplifies this system by containing it in one place. When this is attached to a layer that has its line and colour art separated, it creates an effect where any overlapping colour art is cut away by its own line art.
Attaching a connected Auto-Patch above the layer that needs to be patched will then obscure the joint line of that layer without overlapping the line of the artwork that creates the full part:
| With Colour-Art overlapping | With Auto-Patch overlapping |
| With Colour-Art overlapping | With Auto-Patch overlapping |
Where can the Auto-Patch be used?
Here are a few ways in which the Auto-Patch can be used:
- To create a simple patch on a basic rig that does not require its parts to move in Z-depth (as seen above). However it is recommended to use the more complex patching system when possible (mentioned below).
- As part of a more complex patching system that allows parts to move in Z-depth without breaking the patch.
- In complex rig systems that involve many nodes and cutters and would benefit from the compact nature of the Auto-Patch.
| WARNING: Avoid using the Auto-Patch node with inverted cutters, as this can create anti-aliasing issues in the Render view. For more information, see Why is there a thin line between my layers in the Render view? |
