How do I quickly find an element in my rig?

Updated on

The following steps will help you locate an element, layer, or node in your rig.

Option 1: Select elements in the Camera view

  1. In the Tools toolbar, select the Transformtool.
  2. In the camera view, select the part you wish to locate.
  3. With the part selected, hover the mouse cursor over the Node view or Timeline view.
  4. Press the O key on your keyboard to automatically be navigated to the element.
NOTE: If your Node view is zoomed out very far, you may not see the selection jump. In this case, zoom in a bit and press O again.
TIP: This technique can also be used between the Timeline and Node view by selecting a part in one view, and pressing O in the other.

Option 2: Use the Search Bar in the Node view

  1. Navigate to the Node view and locate the Search bar in the bottom right:

  1. In the Search bar, type the element name and press Enter.
  2. Use the arrow buttons next to the Search bar to cycle through any elements with this name and find the one you need:

NOTE: This technique will only work well if you have named your nodes accordingly and kept your Node view organized.

Q&A

Question:

I’ve searched for the element in the Node view, why can’t I see it?

Answers:
  1. Make sure all your nodes have names and have not been left as the default name.
  2. Make sure that the input to the Search bar has no typos.
  3. Make sure to press Enter after typing in the Search bar. The search will not launch until you press Enter/Return.
Question:

Nothing happens when I press “O” while over the Node view?

Answer:
  1. Check that you have the “Focus on Mouse Enter” activated in the General tab of the Preferences dialog box. See How do I Automatically Activate a View Without Having to Click it? for more information.
  2. Make sure the part you want to find remains selected in the Camera view while you hover the mouse over the Node view.
