What is the difference between an AAF/XML/EDL export and Conformation?

Updated on

Third-party software exports in Storyboard Pro can seem quite similar at first glance, however they each have unique uses for specific workflows. In this article we will cover the usefulness of these export options.

About AAF/XML/EDL Export

This export type allows you to export your storyboard in a format supported by multiple editing softwares. It is recommended that you only use this export if you are finalising your storyboard and do not need to import the changes back into Storyboard Pro.

  • This option does the following during export:
    • Renders video files of all scenes
    • Copies sound files of all scenes
    • Creates a sequence file that links to the above assets with the same timing as the storyboard file
  • The export formats (AAF/XML/EDL) can be used in the following softwares:
    • Final Cut Pro
    • Avid Media Composer
    • Avid Xpress
    • Adobe Premiere
    • Sony Vegas
  • Changes made in the third-party software cannot be reapplied back to the original Storyboard Pro project.

About Conformation

Conformation is a solution for moving back and forth between Storyboard Pro and third-party editing softwares. When you use Conformation, Storyboard Pro creates a file containing the project structure needed for the best compatibility between itself and the features in the third-party software. Once you are done editing the animatic in the editing software, you can use Conformation to import the edited file back into Storyboard Pro, and the changes will be applied.

This option is ideal for workflows that have a lot of back and forth between the storyboard and animatic processes.

  • Conformation export formats (AAF/XML) are best used in the following softwares:
    • Avid Media Composer (AAF)
    • Final Cut Pro (XML)
    • Other third-Party softwares compatible with FCP XML can also be used, but results may vary.
  • Changes made in the third-party software can be reapplied back to the original Storyboard Pro project.
NOTE: It is recommended that you only use the Conformation AAF format in Avid Media Composer, as Avid uses an AAF format that does not follow the AAF Edit Protocol and this is the format that is exported from Storyboard Pro during Conformation.

Software Feature Conformation

During the Conformation export/import process, these software features are processed as follows:

What is exported from Storyboard Pro:
  • Panels become clips.
  • Layers and their animation become nested clips (XML only).
  • Transition type and duration.
  • Sound clip duration, volume keyframes and gain.
  • Camera motion as clip animation.
  • Metadata for panel IDs, transformation data, and project resolution.
  • Scene first frames become markers (optional).
  • Panel captions become clip metadata (optional).
  • Scene reference track (optional).
What is conformed back into Storyboard Pro:
  • Panel order and duration.
  • Duplication and deletion of panels.
  • Added clips become panels.
  • New layers in nested clips become layers (XML only).
  • Layer clip animation becomes layer motion (XML only).
  • Changes to transition type and duration (unsupported types become Dissolves).
  • Adjustments to camera motion clips become keyframe animation.
  • Sound duration, timing, keyframes, creation and deletion.
