How do I export my movie with a timestamp, subtitles, or overlay?

The following article will show you how to create overlays on your exported movies. There are three types of overlays: Burn-In, Camera Grids and Captions. These can be applied in the Export to Movie settings.If you would like to adjust your Burn-In settings for all projects, see How do I change the Burn-In settings for all my projects?

Step 1: Open the Export to Movie dialog box

  1. In the top menu, go to File > Export > Movie…
  2. The Export to Movie dialog box opens:

Option 1: Add a burn-in to the movie export

A burn-in includes information like timecodes and scene numbering in your overlay. If you are interested in other overlay types, skip to the next option. To add a burn-in to your overlay, do the following:

  1. At the bottom of the Export to Movie dialog box, select the Burn-In tab. 


 

  1. Adjust the following to choose your overlay information:
  • Prints Timecode: Check this box to display the timecode.
  • Print Scene names and Panel numbers: Check this box to display the scene and panel numbers.
  • Print Additional Duration: Prints an additional timecode/frames for the current panel, scene, or sequence based on what is selected in the Repeat dropdown.
  1. If you are finished, click on Export to generate your movie. If you want to add more overlays, continue below.

Option 2: Add Camera grid overlays to the movie export

Camera grids include camera reference guides in your overlay. If you are interested in other overlay types, skip to the next option. To add camera grids to your overlay, do the following:

  1. In the Export Movie dialog box, select the Camera Grids tab. 

 

  1. Choose which grid or grids you want displayed on the export.
  2. When you are finished, click on Export to generate your movie. If you want to add more overlays, continue below. 

Step 3: Add subtitles to the movie export

Captions include subtitles of your caption boxes in your overlay. To add captions to your overlay, do the following:

  1. In the Export to Movie dialog box, choose the Captions tab. 

  1. Adjust the following based on how you want the overlay to appear:
    • Print Captions: In the dropdown menu, choose the caption box which has the text you want to see printed as subtitles on the overlay. 

    • Font: The type of font you want to use in the subtitle text.
    • Height (%): Sets the size of captions relative to the height of the exported movie.
    • Position: The position of the caption on the export’s screen.
    • Max Lines: The maximum amount of lines allowed on the captions. Lines that go over the max will result in an ellipse at the end of the unfinished sentence.
    • Text Colour: The colour of the overlay text.
    • Bg Colour: Check this box to give the overlay text a background. Click on the swatch to change the colour of the background.
  2. Click on Export to generate your movie.
