How do I connect a node in a group to something outside of the group?

Updated on

Sometimes you may need to keep a node connected inside a group, but have it affect, or be affected by, something outside the group. This could be for a few reasons, such as needing to keep the order on the currently connected composite, but still allow the node to be used as a mask outside of the group. This article outlines the process of pulling node connections in and out of groups.

Option 1: Connect to an element outside the group

  1. In the Node view, select the node or layer you want to connect outside of the group.
  2. Click and drag to the bottom where the Multi-Port-Out Node is located and connect it.

  1. Exit the group.
  2. Outside of the group, there will be an extra port that can be clicked on.

  1. Click and drag from the port to connect to another element.

Option 2: Connect to an element inside of a group

  1. In the Node view, select the node or layer you want to connect to an element inside of a group.
  2. While holding Alt (Windows/Linux) or Option (macOS), click and drag to connect it to the top of the group to create a connection port.

  1. Enter the group with the new connection added.
  2. Inside the group, the Multi-Port-In node at the top will have an additional port.

  1.  Click and drag from the port to connect to an element inside the group.

TIP: Hovering over ports will show you its path of connections, which can help you identify which port connects to which element.
