How do I find the artwork that is creating the colour recovery dialog message?

Updated on

Sometimes when opening a Harmony scene, a Colour Recovery dialog appears to warn you of missing swatches. It can be difficult to find where the specific item is that is causing the warning, this article will show you how to locate it.

Step 1: Create a recovered colour swatch

  1. Based on the status of your scene, do one of the following:
    • If closed, open the scene.
    • If the scene was opened and you clicked No on the Colour Recovery dialog, close the scene and reopen it so the dialog reappears.
    • If the scene was opened and you clicked Yes on the Colour Recovery dialog, skip this step and proceed to Step 2.
  2. When you open the scene, the Colour Recovery dialog will appear.

  1. Select Yes to create a recovered colour swatch.
  2. In the Colour view, select the red NoColor swatch inside the new colour palette called Default_rec.

Step 2: Find the affected layer or layers

  1. Open the Message Log view via the Windows menu or plus symbol.
  2. In the Message Log view, look for a message line that shows which layer contains the artwork that is missing the colour.

  1. The name of the layer is shown in a file path, after the elements folder (SE_Sleeve_Up in this case).

  1. Select just the layer name and copy it using Ctrl/CMD + C. If more than one layer contains the message, pick one.
  2. In the Node view, paste the name into the search bar in the bottom right corner and press Enter.

  1. Make sure to select the drawing node with the name, not a peg or group.

Step 3: Find the artwork with the missing colour

  1. In the Drawing view, activate the Preview All Art Layers button.
  2. Using the Brush tool, draw a line anywhere in the Drawing view using the red NoColor swatch.

  1. In the Tools toolbar, click the Select by Colourtool.
  2. In the Tool Properties view, activate the following options based on your needs:

  • To affect artwork on all art layers, activate the Apply to Line and Colour Art button (recommended).
  • If multiple layers are missing colours, activate the Apply to Visible Drawing Layers button.
  • If you want to affect all exposed frames on the layer or layers, activate the Apply to All Frames button.
  1. In the Drawing view, use the Select by Colourtool to select the shape you created with the NoColor swatch. This will select all the artwork that has the same colour ID on the selected layers.
  2. Once the artwork is selected, you can delete it or change the colour. Don’t forget to delete the recovery palette and the shape you created afterwards.
TIP: To check if you found and changed all recovered artwork, save, close and open the scene again. If the Colour Recovery dialog still shows up, repeat the steps.
NOTE: Substitution drawings that are not exposed on the timeline and have missing colours will only bring up the Colour Recovery dialog once exposed. If you are working with a scene that has unexposed substitution drawings, it is best to expose them for this process.
