Harmony will only recognise one camera in a scene, you cannot switch between multiple cameras. However, there are creative ways to work with the camera to make it appear like there are multiple cameras in use.
Option 1: Keyframe a camera cut
- If necessary, set up a camera and add a peg to it.
- In the Timeline view, create the keys for the camera cuts using the shortcut F6, or by using the Insert Keyframe
button.
- In the Camera view, use the Transform
tool to move the camera into position on the keyframes.
Make sure the animation of the camera is set to Stop-Motion Keyframes to prevent the camera from drifting between cuts. There should not be any interpolations between the keyframes.
- Use the Play
button, to preview the cuts in the Camera view.
Option 2: Use nodes to create transitions
Camera cuts can be replicated by combining various nodes. Here are some examples:
- Backgrounds and different characters can be turned on and off with an Image Switch node. See the article What is an Image-Switch? to learn more about the function of the Image Switch node.
- The Transparency node can be animated to create a cross-dissolve from one scene to another, or a fade to black/white.
Option 3: Use drawing substitutions on backgrounds
Camera cuts can be created by simply swapping the background using drawing substitutions. This can also be used with the Image-Switch node.
- In the top-menu, select File > Import > Images.
- In the Import Images window, do one of the following:
- While browsing for the files, select multiple images. They will be imported one after the other, with each image becoming its own drawing substitution.
- In the Import Images window, make sure Keep As Original Bitmap in the Import options is selected and choose Add to Existing Layer in the Layer section, to add an image as a new drawing substitution to an already existing bitmap layer.
- Select the OK button.
- In the Timeline or Node view, select the drawing element containing the images.
- In the Library view’s Drawing Substitution window, or in the Drawing Substitutions view, all the available swaps for the background can be previewed. They will be labeled the same as their source file name.

- Switch the drawings in one of the following ways:
- Use the hotkeys [ or ] to swap between the different layouts.
- In the Library view’s Drawing Substitution window, use the slider.
- In the Drawings Substitutions view, click on a thumbnail to select the desired drawing.
- In the Timeline view, make sure each image is exposed to the correct frame, and that there are no gaps that will cause the background to flicker.
TIP: This approach works best with flattened images, like JPGs, PNGs, or flattened PSDs with no layers. You can choose to import a multi-layered PSD as a flat image if needed. |
