How do I change the appearance of the onion skin?

Updated on

Step 1: Adjust the Onion Skin Render Style

  1. Open the Preferences window by doing one of the following:
    • In Windows, go to Edit > Preferences.
    • In macOS, go to Storyboard Pro > Preferences.
  2. In the Preferences dialog box, select the Camera and Stage tab and locate the Onion Skin and Light Table section:

  1. Changing the Onion Skin Render Style will affect how the onion skin is displayed. Select one of the following from the Onion Skin Render Style drop-down list:

  • Original colours: The onion skin will appear in the artwork’s original colours, but at a lower opacity.

  • Coloured: The default setting. Previous poses will be tinted in one colour,  and the following poses will be tinted in another. By default the colours are red for previous and green for next, but these can be adjusted. See Step 2 for more.

  • Coloured Outline: Similar to the Coloured setting, except shapes like solid lines show up with fully opaque outlines. By default the colours are red for previous and green for next, but these can be adjusted. See Step 2 for more.

NOTE: The images used in this article have Lightness as Alpha activated for the onion skin. This setting works with all Onion Skin Render Styles except for Coloured Outline. The  Lightness as Alpha setting can be found under the Onion Skin Render Style option in the Preferences window. If you would like to know more, see How do I make the onion skin more transparent?

Step 2: Change the Onion Skin colours

  1. Under the Onion Skin and Light Table preferences, locate the colour boxes for the Onion Skin Colour Before/After.

  1. Click on a colour box to open up the Select Colour window.

  1. In the Select Colour window, choose the new colour for the onion skin.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Repeat the steps to change the other colour.
  3. The new colours will appear when the onion skin is active:
