How do I make the onion skin more transparent?

Updated on

By default, Storyboard Pro shows onion skin artwork at its full opacity. This can make using it impractical if you have already filled your artwork, as the previous and following poses will appear as solid shapes of colour. This article will show you how to adjust your onion skin settings so you can use it unobstructed.

Step 1: Open the Preferences Window

  1. In the top menu, do one of the following:
    • In Windows, click Edit > Preferences…
    • In macOS click Storyboard Pro > Preferences…
  2. The Preferences dialog box opens:

Step 2: Activate the Lightness as Alpha

  1. In the Preferences dialog box, select the Camera and Stage tab and locate the Onion Skin and Light Table section:

  1. On the left, check the box for Lightness as Alpha.

  1. Click OK to apply the changes.
  2. The onion skin will now adjust the transparency based on the artwork’s colour values. Colours that are lighter are more transparent, and darker colours are more opaque. (White = 100% transparent, black = 100% opaque):

NOTE: If you cannot see the onion skin, activate the Light Table and you will get a result similar to the image above. For more information on the Light Table, please see Using the Light Table.
