How do I edit multiple frames at a time?

Updated on

Tools that can be used for editing multiple frames

The following editing tools can be used to adjust artwork on multiple frames:

  • The Select tool.
  • The Select by Colour tool.
  • The Cutter tool.

The Paint tools can also be used. See How do I paint multiple frames at a time? for more.

Option 1: Use the Apply to All Frames button

This option will allow you to edit artwork on all frames in the layer:

  1. In the Timeline, Node or Xsheet view, select the layer you want to edit artwork on.
  2. In the Tools toolbar, choose an editing tool (Select, Select by Colour, or Cutter tool).
  3. In the Tool Properties view, select the Apply to All Frames button. This will allow the tools you are using to affect all the frames on the active drawing layer.
  4. If you would like to add to the layers you can edit, use the following optional buttons in the Tool Properties view:
    • The Apply to Line and Colour Art button will add all art layers to your selection.
    • The Apply to Visible Drawing Layers button will add the visible Timeline drawing layers to your selection.
  5. Create a selection around an area that covers the artwork on more than one frame. The Onion Skin tool can help with this.

  1. Edit the artwork according to the usual functions of your chosen editing tool.

Option 2: Use the Apply to Onion Skin Range button

If you want to affect only a selection of frames, use this option:

  1. In the Timeline, Node or Xsheet view, select the layer you want to create the colour art on.
  2. In the Tools toolbar, click on the Onion Skin tool.
  3. Use the range of the onion skin to select the frames by doing one of the following:
    • If you’re using the By Frames onion skin mode, use the handlebars In the Timeline view to ‘select’ a section of frames.

    • If you’re using the By Drawings onion skin mode, use the Add and Remove Previous/Next Drawings to select the range.

    • If you would like to change your onion skin mode, please see How do I change my Onion Skin mode?
  4. In the Tools toolbar, choose an editing tool (Select, Select by Colour, or Cutter tool).
  5. In the Tool Properties view, select the Apply to Onion Skin Range button. This will allow the tools you are using to affect all the frames in the onion skin range.
  6. If you would like to add to the layers you can edit, use the following optional buttons in the Tool Properties view:
    • The Apply to Line and Colour Art button will add all art layers to your selection.
    • The Apply to Visible Drawing Layers button will add the visible Timeline drawing layers to your selection.
  7. Create a selection around an area that covers the artwork on more than one frame.

  8. Edit the artwork according to the usual functions of your chosen editing tool.

TIP: It’s a good idea to deactivate the Apply to All Frames or Apply to Onion Skin Range buttons when you are done, as failing to do so can result in the unwanted editing of multiple frames. Harmony will put a red warning at the bottom of the Camera view to remind you when these are activated.
