There are many ways you can import references into the Reference view. Choose whichever option suits your workflow.
Reference view formats
Before importing references into the Reference view, make sure they are in a format that will be recognised:
- PNG (.png)
- JPEG (.jpg)
- PSD (.psd)
- TIFF (.tif)
- TVG (.tvg)
- TARGA (.tga)
- TPL (.tpl)
Option 1: Use the Import References button
- Locate or Open the Reference view.
- In the Reference View toolbar, select the Import References
button.
- Select one or multiple images to import into the Reference view. Selecting multiple will bring in each image as a separate reference.
Option 2: Use the Reference View menu
- Locate or Open the Reference view.
- In the top left corner of the Reference view, select the
button.
- In the menu, choose the Import References… option.
- Select one or multiple images to import into the Reference view. Selecting multiple will bring in each image as a separate reference.
Option 3: Pull in references from the Library view
- Open the Reference view and Library view next to each other so you can easily pull from one to the other.
- In the Library view, locate the template that you want to use as a reference.
- Click and drag the template into the Reference view.
- The template should automatically load as a reference. If the template has more than one drawing or layer, each one will become a separate reference.
| TIP: This option is ideal for character designs that have been drawn in Harmony and have many drawings for expressions, lip-sync, etc. |
| WARNING: It is not recommended to use rigs as references as they often have a lot of layers and drawings and will load in pieces instead of a full drawing reference. |
Option 4: Bring in references via the Explorer/Finder
- Locate or Open the Reference view.
- Open Windows Explorer or Finder and locate the references you want to load.
- Open Harmony and the explorer next to each other. If need be, reduce the size of Harmony so you can comfortably pull images into the software.
- From the Explorer/Finder, drag and drop one or more images into the Reference view. Selecting multiple will bring in each image as a separate reference.
Q&A
Question:
Why did my references disappear when I opened and reopened the scene? Do I have to import them again?
Answers:
References are automatically saved in the scene files and simply need to be loaded when reopening a scene. To do this, open the Reference view menu and choose Load Default References.
