How do I remove or fill the gaps in my timeline?

Updated on

When editing your storyboard, you may end up with gaps in the timeline that leave a blank space on playback. This generally happens while using the Animatic Editing Mode, and this can happen on purpose or by accident. This article will show you a few ways to remove/fill these gaps.

Option 1: Use Ripple Delete Space to remove gaps

If you simply want to remove the gaps in your timeline without need to adjust the length of any panels, use this option. You can use this feature whether you are using Animatic Editing Mode or not.

  1. In the Timeline view, click on the gap you want to delete (the playhead must be over the gap).
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Right click and select Ripple Delete Space from the menu.
    • In the top menu, go to Edit > Ripple Delete Space.
    • Press Shift + Delete (Windows) or Shift + Backspace (macOS).
  3. The gap will be deleted and the panels after it will ripple shift backwards to fill the empty space.

Option 2: Use Animatic Editing Mode to adjust panels

If you want to fill the gaps by extending the duration of the panels on either side of it, use this option.

  1. In the bottom left of the Timeline view, look for the Animatic Editing Mode button and activate it if it isn’t already.

  1. Find the gap in your timeline and hover the cursor over the outer edge of one of the panels on either side. The cursor will turn into a red bracket with an arrow.
  2. Click and hold the edge of the panel, and drag it to fill the gap.

TIP: You can temporarily enable or disable the Animatic Editing Mode by pressing Ctrl (Windows) or ⌘ (Mac OS) while hovering on the edge of a panel. When the icon is red, it is in Animatic Editing Mode. The panel length can be edited without causing the other panels to ripple. When it is yellow, it will ripple all the panels that follow the modification.

Option 3: Use Animatic Editing Mode to insert panels/scenes into gaps

If you want to insert new or existing content into the gaps, use this option.

  1. In the bottom left of the Timeline view, make sure the Animatic Editing Mode button is activated.
  2. Find the gap where you want to insert content, and select the scene or panel just before it (to the left).
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If you are inserting a new scene between 2 scenes, use the Add Scene button.
    • If you are inserting a panel in an existing scene, use one of the Add Panel , , buttons.
  4. The new scene or panel will be inserted.
  5. If needed, adjust the timing of the scene/panel.

You can also drag and drop or paste a copied scene into the gap, as long as the scene you wish to insert does not exceed the duration of the gap.

TIP: You can also drag and drop a library template or paste a copied scene/panel into the gap, as long as the scene/panel you insert does not exceed the duration of the gap.
NOTE: You can also insert scenes and panels into gaps when Animatic Editing Mode is disabled, however this will result in the inserted element being placed before the gap, while also keeping the gap and ripple shifting subsequent panels down. Inserting while using the Editing Mode will insert the panel/scene without affecting the timing of following panels.
