How do I export an image sequence with transparency?

Updated on

Rendering an image sequence with transparency involves using the Write node to set up the correct image format. For more about rendering image sequences using the Write node, see How do I Export a Rendered Image Sequence?

Step 1: Open the Write node layer properties

  1. In the Node view locate the Write node.

  1. Click on the yellow square on the left side of the Write node.

  1. The Layer Properties window will appear:

Step 2: Edit the Write node settings

In the Write node settings, you will need to pick an image type that supports transparency. See the article What Harmony import/export formats support alpha? to review the supported options.

For more in depth information about Write node settings, see How do I Export a Rendered Image Sequence? These steps only cover the related alpha options.

  1. In the Write node, choose your export folder, naming convention etc.
  2. In the Image Format dropdown field, select a file type that supports transparency.

  1. In the Colours dropdown field, select the option Colour + Alpha.

Step 3: Render from the Write node

  1. In the Top menu, select File > Export > Render Write Nodes.
  2. The Render Write Nodes window will appear:

  1. Select the frame export range (All Frames or Selected Frames).
  2. When you’re done, click the OK button.
  3. The image sequence will be rendered to your chosen location.

Q&A

Question 1:

Why is there no Colour + Alpha option when I use the Colours dropdown?

Answer:
  1. An image format that doesn’t support alpha channels might have been chosen in the Image Format dropdown. Double check the format and choose another if need be.
Question 2:

Why is the transparency missing when I open one of the rendered images?

Answers:
  1. Double check that there are no Colour-cards or backgrounds enabled in Harmony before rendering.
  2. Make sure the Colour settings in the Write node were set to Colour + Alpha.
  3. Make sure you are opening the image in a software or app that supports transparency. Alternatively, some image apps have very light background colours which can look like there is no transparency. Try opening the image in another software.
