How do I turn my thumbnails page into panels?

Updated on

If you’ve been using Storyboard Pro’s thumbnail pages, you can convert the artwork in each thumbnail into a panel or scene. To learn how to create a thumbnailing page, see How can I make a page of thumbnails for rough sketching?

Step 1: Check your thumbnails

Before converting your thumbnails to panels/scenes, make sure of the following:

  • That you are happy with your thumbnails as conversion can only be reversed with Ctrl/CMD + Z. Duplicate your thumbnail panel or save it in the library if you want to keep a copy.
  • In the Panel view:
    • That your thumbnails are ordered correctly as this will determine the order of the artwork in the panels.
    • That all thumbnails you want to convert are visible and not hidden.
  • In the Timeline view:
    • That the thumbnailing page is positioned where you want the new panels or scenes to be created.
  • In the Camera/Stage view:
    • That artwork is not overlapping where you don’t want it to show up. Artwork outside the invisible boundary (the yellow area shown below) will show up in an adjacent panel when converted (this can change based on panel spacing).

Step 2: Convert the thumbnails

  1. In the Thumbnails or Timeline view, select the thumbnailing panel you want to convert.
  2. In the Panel view, select the Convert to Panels… button.

  1. The Convert to Panels dialog box opens:

  1. Choose the settings based on your needs:
    • Convert to Panels: Selecting this will turn each individual thumbnail into a panel within the same scene.
    • Convert to Scenes: Selecting this will turn each individual thumbnail into the first panel of a new scene.
    • Starting Name: Only available if you choose Convert to Scenes. Allows you to define the name of the first converted scene. Following scenes will use this as a reference.
    • Ignore Empty panels: Ticking this will ignore empty thumbnails when converting. Hidden thumbnails will be ignored regardless.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Your thumbnails will be converted into panels and/or scenes in the same location as the original thumbnailing page.
TIP: Thumbnail pages can also be created and exported as a blank template. Importing artwork drawn in the panel layout can then be aligned in Storyboard Pro for conversion to panels and scenes.
