How do I reduce the file size of my Storyboard Pro project?

Updated on

A complex Storyboard Pro file can sometimes become bulky, especially if it has gone through many revisions. The Optimize Project option is great for optimizing artwork, but if you want to significantly reduce the size of your file, the best option is via Project Management.

Step 1: Extract your storyboard

When you work on a storyboard, the software remembers and stores everything you do, each stroke, each image file, each sound imported into your project. Extracting creates a new storyboard project that contains only the elements actively existing in the storyboard, discarding any unneeded extras.

Extracting is usually used to separate a section of a storyboard to share with others, but in this case you will need to extract the entire storyboard.

  1. In the top menu, go to File > Project Management > Extract…
  2. You may be asked to save your project. Click Yes to proceed.

  1. The Extract Storyboard dialogue box will open.

  1. Do one of the following to select all the scenes in the project:
    • Click on the top scene and drag down until all scenes are highlighted.
    • Click on the top scene, hold Shift, and then select the last scene.
    • Use the Select All shortcut Ctrl + A (Windows) or ⌘ + A (macOS).
  2. Click on Extract Selected Scenes.

  1. A browser window will open and prompt you to save the New Storyboard Project.
  2. Choose a location and create a new project name, select the file type (.sboard file and folder or packed file .sbpz) and click Save.
  3. The extract now appears in the Projects section of the Extract Storyboard window.
  4. Select it and click OK.

  1. The Extract Project progress window will appear as the project is processed. It will disappear when the process is complete.

  1. Compare the storyboard files to see how much the size has been reduced.
WARNING: This process does not automatically transfer you to the new extracted project! You will still be in the original file. Make sure to close this file and open the new extracted one to continue working.
